John West, founder of the Ligonier Country Market, grew up in the Highland Park area of Pittsburgh. He often drove his mother to the East Liberty market on Saturday mornings. After he married and moved to Ligonier, he became quite curious as to why there was no seasonal market here. In 1976 Ligonier Valley was celebrating the bicentennial of the United States, and the chairman in charge, Shepherd Witman, a good friend of John’s, had been listening to John’s keen interest in a market and asked him if he would do what was necessary to initiate a Country Market.
After serving in the Army during WWII, John was graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Business. He took a job as a salesman for the Von Senden Company, maybe the oldest promotional product company in the country, established in 1891, and went on to become the president and owner of the Company. Promotion of the Ligonier Country Market with the help of so very many others has been most fulfilling.
