"Conserve, Protect and Restore the Natural Resources of the Loyalhanna Creek Watershed"

The 298 square-mile Loyalhanna Creek Watershed is located in Westmoreland County in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The Loyalhanna Creek originates on the western slope of Laurel Ridge, south of Ligonier Township, and flows northwest through Ligonier, Latrobe, New Alexandria, and finally on to Saltsburg where it meets the Conemaugh River. Together, they form the Kiskiminetas River, which flows into the Allegheny River.

The Loyalhanna Creek Watershed is comprised of 2,500 miles of stream, each varying in origin, size, and quality. Despite abundant forests in the headwaters and natural areas throughout its middle section, the Loyalhanna Creek Watershed is impacted by a series of challenges including abandoned mine drainage (AMD), sedimentation as a result of erosion and nutrient loading. The combination of historic coal mining, farming, and development threaten the Loyalhanna Creek Watershed and its quality.

In 1971, the Loyalhanna Watershed Association (LWA) was founded to address the various pollution impacts throughout the watershed and to preserve natural areas. Today, LWA's primary objectives remain to protect and improve our area waterways, conserve land parcels and riparian corridors as green, open space, provide educational opportunities to students of all ages and backgrounds, and foster a watershed stewardship ethic in the communities we serve.

Celebrating 45 Years of Environmental Excellence
1971 ~ 2016

In 2016, The Loyalhanna Watershed Association and the Ligonier Country Market teamed up to host the annual Harvest Dinner where community members enjoy a true farm to table experience.  All proceeds pay for the educational opportunities provided by the Watershed every year free of charge to the schools.  The Market gathers door prizes, appetizers and desserts from vendors as an additional donation to the Watershed.

In 2020, this partnership extended to the annual Octoberfest.  Vendors and entertainment were available to the community.  All proceeds from this are donated to the local fire departments.

Weeders and Seeders is Ligonier's very active Garden Club. New members are always welcome!

We are helping our Community in many ways, education, beautification of our town and caring for our community. Below are a few pictures of activities that we are involved in.

We help maintain the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce sign with plantings. We also plant and take care of the containers at the Ligonier Valley Library. Veteran's Park, maintained by us, is a Blue Star Memorial project which was voted 2nd best in the nation for a small garden club the year it was dedicated. We plant and keep up with the beautiful flowerbeds in front of the YMCA. The flowerbed area of St. Clair Park is another garden we attend to. We help plant and grow a variety of special flowerbeds at the Penn State Certified Pollinator Friendly Garden at Ligonier Country Market.

We organize special activities for children which consist of the planting of the Children's Community Garden and having the children paint pumpkins in the fall with pumpkins grown from the children’s vegetable garden.

Other activates include answering gardening questions when we are a feature at the Ligonier Country Market. We were featured 4 times during the 2014 season.

Come and join us for our meetings. These usually precede our educational programs. If you join, and we hope you will, dues are just $25 a year. This helps us to continue our community service projects.
